The number 11 was within the Big Ten emblem for this reason. The designers of the Big Ten emblem picked a simpler option than trying to integrate 12 to the emblem with the twelve teams. Right now the "Big Ten" emblem is very simple. Both "big" and "ten" are used, and that is it. The number 10 is suggested by the "I" and "G" in "Big". The logo is very easy and simple.
